UP social media policy: Yogi govt to offer influencers up to ₹8 lakh per month

The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday (Aug 27) unveiled a new digital media policy -Uttar Pradesh Digital Media Policy, 2024, prepared by the state information department.

“The government has decided to list agencies/firms to give advertisement to promote them for making and displaying content/tweet/video/post/reels about schemes and achievements of the UP government on online platforms such as X, Facebook, Instagram and Youtube,” according to the Principal Secretary, information department, Sanjay Prasad.

In a statement, Prasad said, the policy's implementation could lead to increased job prospects for Uttar Pradesh residents living away from home.

The department has categorised the influencers/agencies/firms into four categories on the basis of subscribers/followers, as per the statement issued on Tuesday.

According to the category, the influencers/account holders/operators on X, Facebook and Instagram will be paid a maximum of Rs 5 lakh, Rs 4 lakh, Rs 3 lakh and Rs 2 lakh, respectively per month, the policy says.

The policy also has a provision for initiating legal action against agencies/firms if they upload any “objectionable content” on platforms such as Facebook, X, Instagram and YouTube. It has been made clear that the content “should not be indecent, obscene or anti-national,” the policy says.
